The Myth of Being Ready

There is a strange moment that happens right before almost every big decision.

The website is built. The product is finished. The application is complete. The idea has been sitting in your head for months. Everything that needed to happen has happened.

Yet somehow, moving forward still feels… difficult.

A lot of people assume there will be a moment when they finally feel ready. A moment when the uncertainty disappears, the doubts quiet down, and the decision suddenly feels obvious.

The problem is that moment rarely arrives.

Instead, most of us find ourselves standing in front of opportunities we have spent weeks, months, or even years working toward while simultaneously wondering if we should wait a little longer.

One more tweak. One more revision. One more round of research. One more week.

At first, those delays can feel productive. Responsible, even. Preparation has value. Refinement has value. Learning has value.

The challenge is that there comes a point when preparation quietly transforms into permission seeking. The project reaches the finish line long before our doubts do.

Readiness is not a certificate that arrives in the mail. It is not a feeling that suddenly appears after enough planning. It is not something that can be measured or verified before taking action.

If it were, far fewer people would start businesses, launch products, move to new cities, change careers, or pursue creative work.

Most meaningful things begin while doubt is still sitting in the room.

The people we admire often look confident from a distance, but confidence can be misleading. What appears to be certainty is frequently just someone choosing to move forward despite uncertainty.

The difference is easy to miss. The website goes live before it feels perfect. The product launches before every question has been answered. The opportunity is accepted before every fear has disappeared.

Looking back, the moment rarely feels as dramatic as we imagined. The decision gets made, the work continues, and life moves forward.

Life has a habit of continuing before we feel ready for it.

Perhaps that is why readiness can feel so elusive. We spend so much time looking for it ahead of us that we fail to notice where it usually appears.
